Overview: Video game development clubs challenge students with different situations and learning opportunities than classrooms do. This presentation focuses on how clubs - two that were established by the speaker - complement and provide practice for classroom learning. Clubs can work more easily across disciplines, with a broader range of incoming student skills and backgrounds. Clubs can provide an incredible level of control in design and management experience with less at stake. This talk focuses on what can be learned from what goes on in these organizations, something for educators to consider when advising or inspiring students to create or iterate on their own extracurricular organizations.
