Session Name:

Making a Mockery: Ruminations on COW CLICKER

Overview:

Ian Bogost doesnt like your Facebook games. He doesnt care how much money you are making. He doesnt care if your mom plays them. He finds them troubled and tragic. But instead of mounting mere invective, in mid-2010 he decided to make a social game to test his theory of them. The result is COW CLICKER, a Facebook game about Facebook games. It's partly a satire, partly a playable theory of social games, and partly an earnest example of one. The game has enjoyed surprising success among players, developers, and the general public. This session covers the creation and reception of COW CLICKER, as well as the lessons it invites us to chew on.
