Overview: Statistics tell us that most players don't finish our games, let alone replay them. For RPGs, however, choice, consequence and replayability are viewed as crucial aspects of the genre. How do we provide players with a satisfying experience without tripling or quadrupling our workload?
This talk will outline, compare and contrast three common branching structures, exploring the positives and negatives from both story and production perspectives.
Finally, it will explore why the repeating diamond narrative or parallel paths structure is most successful in providing a satisfying branching experience, without the headache of a traditional branching narrative.
