Session Name:

How Design Can Ensure Impartial Scientific Fairness in User Research

Overview:

User research can and should be a powerful tool for designers. Yet, time and again, those at Microsoft Studios User Research meet designers who are intimidated by the process, unsure how to take advantage of what they can deliver, or uncertain how to ensure that the tests that are run are fair (both to the user but also the designer). It can be hard for someone not versed in the design principles of science to understand what is high quality research, and what merely uses the patina of methods to garner persuasiveness. This talk will clarify that distinction by laying out the design principles that shape good research, explaining what URs need most from designers, and detailing some simple checks a designer can request to ensure they receive the highest quality user research.
