Virtual Reality is easy! Right? Headsets are ubiquitous and all you have to do is press a button in Unity or Unreal and its 3D, right? Right? For students at the 140-year-old art and design school The Cleveland Institute of Art, Virtual Reality is, however, much more than that. This presentation outlines the aesthetic, and often unusual, curriculum taught in the Introduction to Virtual and Augmented reality course that is required for all Game Design majors. Students learn to see, touch, hear, and smell their way through the semester learning some very "old school" techniques along the way. This presentation also addresses some of the challenges faced when teaching Virtual Reality remotely during a global pandemic.
