Overview: In 2022, the World Health Organization singled out video games as a technology that globally causes mental health problems, by formally adding "Gaming Disorder" as new psychiatric condition to their official list of recognized diseases. In this talk, Professor Przybylski will explain the evidence and politics behind the decision, and talk about his ongoing research collaborations with Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft that are improving we know about how games influence health. He will also cover the implications the WHO has for the sector, and how publishers and platforms can improve research and counter stigmatizing global narratives about games.
