Overview: Games on social networks can grow very large, very quickly; they can go from zero to millions of daily players in a matter of days. Even small teams can create titles that explode in popularity and become blockbusters. But games that can grow quickly need infrastructure that can scale just as quickly, otherwise they will fall over just as they get popular. This talk describes architectures and proven techniques for building scalable server infrastructure, particularly for social web games, operating on the web and social networks. Some of the techniques are tried-and-true imports from the web world, which has developed many techniques for scaling web sites. Others are game-specific developments, created to fit the particular needs of high-volume persistent games.
