Session Name:

Designing Games for Game Designers

Overview:

Stone has been teaching game design classes and workshops for the past 10 years. During this time he has developed a series of card and board games that are not only designed to entertain but also to teach the fundamentals of game design. In this session, he describes the evolution of these games and talks about the underlying lessons contained in each one.

Each one of the games covers a specific topic, such as writing rule systems, choosing goals, tuning opposition, or balancing asymmetric systems. Since his students are simultaneously designers and players, the act of playing one of these games reinforces the lesson much more effectively than an academic lecture or an open-ended exercise.
