Session Name:

Sexism and the Game Industry: An Empirical Study

Overview:

This presentation covers the results of an extensive academic study on sexism and gender problems in the game industry. By providing voices to dozens of women (and a handful of men) who have been unable to discuss these problems publicly, this study is able to highlight common gender problems in the game industry through their specific experiences with gender discrimination and harassment, while backing up the concepts their statements illustrate with hard statistics. The talk hopes to change minds about the culture surround our medium, and promote the benefits to gender-inclusive games and gaming workplaces. Ultimately, this study breaks ground in the subject of gender in games and will benefit all in the professional community - this lecture is the first step in informing that community.
