Session Name:

Educators Summit: Online Game Design Education: The Good, the Bad, and the Green Screen

Overview:

What happens when an educator has to take course material intended for on-campus game design college programs and adapt them into 7-minute videos for online learners? And how do we structure our curricula to address the many issues in the game industry and gaming culture. The MIT Game Lab spent 2022 creating a new online game design course highlighting social and cultural responsibility, producing 200 hours of new video content, assignments, and demo code. This talk will discuss what actually happens during months of planning, filming, editing, site design, and review. Based on a preliminary design exploration, the speakers will also demonstrate how body synchronized avatars, and other livestreaming/youtuber tropes and technology provides educators with new teaching affordances.
