Architecting Archean: Simultaneously Building for Room-Scale and Mobile VR, AR, and All Input Devices


This talk encompasses lessons and techniques learned in supporting a wide range of VR and AR devices in Archean, including Rift, Vive, GearVR, Cardboard, Tango, and lots of third party physical, optical, and traditional inputs. The talk will focus on the codebase architecture, designed to separate hardware support from gameplay functionality by creating abstraction layers which let the developer add more platforms, and also more gameplay functionality, while neither adding any extra work for the other, as well as editor extensions and SDK managers for handling platform-specific scene and project setup automatically, allowing immediate building across wildly varied platforms.
