Session Name: | Depiction of War in Games: Can You Do Better? |
Speaker(s): | Andrew Barron |
Company Name(s): | Bohemia Interactive Simulations |
Track / Format: | Game Narrative Summit |
Overview: | Who teaches children about war? In democratic societies the military is controlled by politicians, but who sets voter's expectations of what war must be like, and how to talk and think about it? Increasingly, this role is filled by the entertainment industry. War is frequently portrayed in games, but is the subject being treated responsibly? In this session, the speaker discusses his experience making game-based training simulators for real military use; working for DARPA training soldiers to use smartphone apps for combat; and his own war experience attempting to "win hearts and minds" in Afghanistan. Spoiler: war looks nothing like the games. |
