Designing the Ideal Level Design Portfolio: What Hiring Teams Actually Look For

Overview:

This session explores how level designers can build strong, effective portfolios that clearly communicate design thinking, ownership, and measurable impact. Drawing from real hiring experience across AAA and indie development, the talk breaks down what hiring teams actually evaluate when reviewing level design portfolios and why many otherwise capable designers fail to stand out.The presentation examines the difference between showing completed environments and communicating decision-making. It outlines how to structure compelling case studies, how to present greybox and shipped work with clarity, and how to demonstrate iteration, collaboration, and problem-solving within production constraints. Attendees will learn how to frame their contributions in a way that signals readiness for professional development environments. The session also addresses common portfolio weaknesses, including overreliance on visuals, lack of documented process, unclear ownership, and poor structural organization. By the end of the talk, attendees will have a practical framework for evaluating and restructuring their own portfolios to better align with what hiring teams actually look for.
