Overview: The gameplay of Fortnite allows players to construct elaborate, large-scale buildings in an attempt to defend themselves against the inhabitants of a hostile world. In this talk, Epic Games gameplay programmer Billy Bramer outlines the challenges, successes, and failures of designing and implementing the core of Fortnite's building system. Billy will provide an in-depth look at the iterative process of Fortnite, highlighting specific examples and lessons learned along the way. In particular, attention will be paid to the complicated task of allowing players to build rapidly and accurately for combat purposes, without also hampering their architectural creativity in the process.
