Session Name:

We're Being Unreasonable: Understanding and Avoiding Bias in Teams

Overview:

In this talk, Thomas Handley will discuss the weak and fallible nature of humans, analyzing how this impacts the use of broken tools and overly convenient explanations.
He will discuss how, as producers and managers, it is part of the job and responsibility to engineer the way people work, the way they act and the way they interact. Understanding weaknesses, the way people think and behave, is critical to this.
It is important to act on such knowledge with rigor and use it to try and understand the world and game development. This will help to avoid pitfalls and inform decisions about what techniques to use, and which rules to follow and break.
This talk provides an overview of a number of academic studies demonstrating specific ways in which people are flawed and some real-world examples showing what can be done to guard against it in our teams.
