Overview: Rooted in Aardman Animations' tradition for analogue animation techniques, the art team for '11-11 Memories Retold', created a novel rendering pipeline to imitate the look of oil painted animation to a degree not seen in games before. Graphics programmer Alexander Birke will take you through the development of the effect and show how the approach of simulating brush strokes with a full screen particle system allows for features such as broken up edges, boiling surfaces, different brush types, and painterly transitions. They will cover the challenges caused by this new approach and the workflows used to create assets for it, along with how it was optimized on both the technical and artistic side.
