Session Name:

Advocating for Yourself: How to Change the Public Perception of Games and Game Developers

Overview:

Having spent 5 years as Executive Director of the International Game Developers Association (2012-2017), Kate Edwards gained a very unique perspective on attitudes towards the game development profession. Despite being a massive cultural and economic force, it's still struggling to gain respect as a creative art form and as leaders in evolving entertainment. In short, game developers have lost control of the narrative of their own profession and it's up to them to be the their own best advocates. In this talk, Kate will briefly reflect on her lessons learned in the IGDA role, illustrate the path to advocacy (including overcoming impostor syndrome), confront the major issues facing the industry today, and embolden individuals to act now and become their own best advocates.
