Session Name:

Representing LGBT+ Characters in Games: Two Case Studies

Overview:

How do you respectfully create LGBT+ characters and narratives in a way that naturally fits into your game's world? Game narrative designer Tori Schafer will explain her design process and implementation of these themes from both the MMORPG Elder Scrolls Online - in acclaimed quests such as the GLAAD Award-winning 'Manor Of Masques' - and the upcoming indie game Backbone. In Elder Scrolls Online, LGBT+ characters are fully accepted by their society, whereas the society of Backbone rejects any character who is openly LGBT+. What can be learned from these two approaches, and how can we as game designers ensure that all depictions, good and bad, are respectful to the LGBT+ community?
