Simulacra, Canny and Uncanny Immersion, Resonance, and How Nuking the Fridge Can Sour Your Grapes

Overview:

The lecture will show how Bernd Diemer, as a child, learned to make a media experience his own, and how this improved the experience immeasurably. Examples for this will be fairy tales, reenacting movies as a kid, and losing yourself in a game or a movie as an adult. It will then try to point out parallel mechanisms in movies, games and other media to good and bad results, with examples from mashups, fan movies and user generated content. The lecture will try to entertain, while giving the audience the takeaway of an insight into personal and perhaps general principles that can be used to improve games.
